Why it matters
Usually expected after you, or auto-renew, paid for another term. It also tells you the renewal reached the registry and isn’t just sitting in your registrar’s basket; the new expiry date appears in RDAP once the renewal completes.
When you’d see it
You see it briefly after a renewal is submitted to a registry that processes renewals asynchronously. If it lingers for days, ask the registrar whether payment cleared.
How it shows up in a lookup
In a gTLD WHOIS lookup it appears as “Domain Status: pendingRenew https://icann.org/epp#pendingRenew”; RDAP shows it as “pending renew”. It is managed by the registry as a result of an operation (RFC 5731 §2.3), not a setting you or your registrar toggle directly.
What to do
Nothing, if you meant to renew. If you didn’t and don’t want the cost, talk to your registrar about your options straight away.
Combination rules
Must not be combined with clientRenewProhibited or serverRenewProhibited (RFC 5731 §2.3).
